When is a sport, not a sport?

Welcome to the latest in a line of posting something to provoke discussion, and disappearing.

Seriously, after reading about BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards (come on Jenson!) on another forum, the debate turned to darts, and what is and isn’t sport.
Naturally, someone posted about how its definitely a sport, it has organised competitions etc, requires skill, concentration etc. Equally, someone countered that its not a sport as you hardly have any form of exertion in darts etc, its a game, not a sport etc etc. Sound familiar with our racing?
Anyway, then someone posted a link to Sport England, and sure enough, darts is listed as a sport.

…..but so is Model Aircraft flying.

That surprised me, as one of the major hurdles for us racers, race organisers and other general RC bashers is convincing whoever owns the land we’d like to use that playing with our cars IS a sport, it IS technical, and should be treated accordingly!
Getting Sport England to approve it and recognise it as an official sport would be a step in the right direction for certain.
Here’s what they say about the process:

| The main assessment criteria used to assess whether we will recognise an activity as a sport, uses a definition of sport contained in the Council of Europe’s European Sports Charter 1993.
This defines sport as: “Sport means all forms of physical activity which, through casual or organised participation aim at expressing or improving physical fitness and mental well-being, forming social relationships or obtaining results in competition at all levels.” The other criteria include: * The essential purpose of the activity |

Do you think we fit the bill on that part? Surely we do, if flying RC aircraft does?
Would the BRCA we willing to look into applying, or have they already done so in the past? Or do we already count by having the BRCA come under the MSA umbrella?
